Memorial tenure and lease extensions

As part of ensuring our cemeteries remain cared for and sustainable for future generations, interment rights are granted for a set period of time. When this tenure is approaching its expiry, families have the option to extend the interment right.

Extending the tenure allows families to continue to maintain their existing site for future use, visitation, or memorialisation. We will contact the interment right holder (and their nominated contact) well before the tenure expires to provide information and guidance about the renewal process.

If you have been contacted regarding an expiry notification, the renewal process is listed below.

Tenures and lease extensions

If your lease has expired, we are here to help guide you through your options. You are welcome to extend your lease and keep your site active, or if you feel the time is right, you may return your plot into the caring hands of the Trust.

Extending your current memorial

We offer the opportunity to extend your site's tenure in five-year increments, giving your family flexibility and peace of mind. Cremation and lawn sites can be extended for up to 50 years, while vaults may be extended for up to 99 years. Extending your tenure ensures your site remains active, maintained, and available as a lasting place of reflection. If your tenure is nearing expiry or you'd like to add further time, please don't hesitate to contact our team to discuss your options.

Surrendering the Plot

If you find that you no longer wish to continue with the financial upkeep of the plot, we are here to help. You are welcome to return your site into the care of the Payneham and Dudley Park Cemeteries Trust. If the site is purchased by another family any existing interments will be carefully and reverently lowered within the site, and all records will be lovingly preserved for future generations. Before the process is finalised, we offer the ability to collect any monuments or plaques from the site. When you feel ready to take this step, please reach out to our office to request a Surrender Form — our team is here to guide you through the process.

Perpetual memorial alternatives

Our perpetual memorial areas at Payneham and Dudley Park Cemeteries offer a lasting place of remembrance without the ongoing responsibilities of a traditional burial or cremation site. These special spaces are cared for in perpetuity, providing peace of mind for families who wish to honour their loved ones in a beautiful, low-maintenance setting. Perpetual memorials are also a thoughtful option for those who have moved away from their family's burial site but wish to establish a nearby place of reflection.

Steps to renew your memorial

Renewing your tenure is a simple process, offering you the flexibility to choose an extension period that best suits your family's needs. Extensions are available in five-year increments, with cremation and lawn sites extendable up to 50 years, and vaults up to 99 years. Each five-year block is available at a cost of $860. Anyone with interest in the site has the ability to add tenure, it does not have to be the interment right holder.
